睡眠とストレスの関係~ストレスの分類と影響|ストレス解消音楽

In this series, we talk about sleep.

Lately, have you all been sleeping comfortably and having good dreams?

In reality, both globally and in our own country, unprecedented calamities continue to occur.

As such, everyone is probably feeling stressed.

This time, I would like to touch upon sleep and stress.

1. Environment and Body are Both Important for Good Sleep ~ For quality sleep, environment and body are crucial

What is the situation like in the room where you sleep?

Regarding your sleep environment, have you adjusted the room temperature, dimmed the lights, and is there no particular noise from your neighbors?

Some people may even be lulled into the world of dreams by listening to easy-listening music at a low volume.

Please refer to the diagram below.

In addition to environmental factors, physical factors are also important.

Do you have any particular health problems with your respiratory, circulatory, digestive, or urinary systems?

In other words, environmental and physical factors are fundamentally indispensable for good sleep.

2. First, Check What Kind of Stress You Have ~ Stress Classification and Checklist

Modern society is overly complex, and all kinds of stress affect everyone.

So, what kind of stress are we talking about?

Let's imagine your mind and body as a soft ball.

Stress is the distortion of the ball when pressure is applied to it and it tries to return to its original shape.

It's a bit technical, but medically, stress is broadly classified into three types.

Please look at the table below and try to remember and check which items apply to you.

3. Creative Use of Music for Sleep ~ How to achieve quality sleep? The difference between medicine and "sound medicine"

For quality sleep,

in addition to ① Environment and ② Body,

③ Psychological stress is important.

Common problems include:

  • Tension

  • Anxiety

  • Personality traits like excessive worrying or being too serious

  • Worries

  • Depression

and so on.

So what should we do?

What I don't particularly recommend is

④ taking sleeping pills or indulging in stimulants orally.

The thing I particularly recommend is

⑤ "sound medicine" which involves selecting and utilizing appropriate music.

Now, let's introduce an episode suitable for spring.

When we delve into ancient Chinese history, we find a calamity, in a sense, concerning Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty and Yang Guifei.

The emperor doted on his concubine so much that he wouldn't leave his bed when it got warm, and consequently, he neglected his governmental duties.

The poet Bai Juyi recorded this historical fact, and in his long narrative poem "Chang Hen Ge" (Song of Everlasting Sorrow), there is the following passage:

驪宮高処入青雲 仙楽風飄処処聞
緩歌慢舞凝糸竹 尽日君王看不足

(Translation)

The Huaqing Palace at Mount Li was so high it reached into the blue clouds,

Immortal music drifted on the wind and was heard everywhere.

Slow songs and graceful dances, and the melodies of string and bamboo instruments were beautiful,

The emperor could watch them all day long and never tire.

Even for women of unparalleled beauty who made their mark in history, various stresses arose from within and without.

Compared to a time when they couldn't cope, solutions can surely be found in modern Japan if we think and devise them.

I hope you can overcome stress and effectively control your mind and body.
