What's trending now is **"aroma."**

It can heal your tired mind and body, and restore your energy for tomorrow.

Because it's used for treatment, it's called **aromatherapy.**

Originally, the word "aroma" was transferred from Greek to English in the 19th century.

It means **"sweet spice"** and is said to include concepts such as pleasant scent, fragrance, atmosphere, dignity, and grace.

So, doesn't just hearing the word "aroma" make you feel somewhat pleasant?

In this column, we will delve into the **interaction of the five senses**—especially **hearing, smell, and taste.**

1. "Delicious" = Taste + Smell?

~Aromas and meals can be enjoyed thanks to the function and interaction of the five senses

Humans have **five senses** as sensory organs.

Can you list all **five** of them fluently?

Uh...

Then, let me teach you a trick to remember them instantly.

Try talking while moving and touching your right hand.

① Hearing (right ear)

② Sight (right eye)

③ Smell (nose)

④ Taste (tongue)

⑤ Touch (rubbing thumb and index finger together)

Now, close your eyes and repeat them again.

You've got it now, haven't you?

"Delicious" = Taste + Smell

The sensation of **"delicious"** when we eat a feast,

is born from the combination of **③ smell and ④ taste** among the five senses.

Perhaps we can savor Udon and Soba,

thanks to the remarkable Japanese knack of "slurping" them while breathing in.

Now, these two senses, **smell and taste**, are also deeply involved in **aroma.**

2. Healing with Hearing: "Music Therapy"

~The power of music to awaken memories of the five senses

Works on three levels of consciousness

Among the five senses that humans possess,

the treatment and practice related to **① hearing** is **music therapy.**

In fact, music has great power and directly affects **all levels of our consciousness.**

By choosing appropriate music, it brings us peace and deep sleep.

Acts on the five senses through hearing

Music also awakens and stimulates **memories of the five senses.**

When you listen to your favorite music, familiar songs, or nostalgic tunes, **you might recall the sensations of seeing, hearing, or eating delicious things from your youth.**

Do you have any such experiences or memories?

◆Examples of memories stimulated by music

Hearing: Insects chirping, animal cries, sound of bells

Sight: Scenery, flowers and plants, paintings and photographs

Smell: Flowers, fruits, food aromas

Taste: Seasonal foods, sakura mochi, Pacific saury

Touch: Seasonal flowers and objects, acorns

3. Aromatherapy × Music Therapy

~Combining the two for greater well-being

I have been involved in **primary care medicine and integrated medicine** aiming for **holistic medicine (*)**.

**(*) Holistic medicine**… This refers to medical care that, without limiting itself to specific body parts or diseases, broadly considers the patient's **psychological and social aspects**, and provides **individualized, comprehensive disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.**

Among these, the fundamentally important thing is a **proper lifestyle.**

Diet, exercise, and sleep should be kept as regular as possible.

When your mind and body are tired, self-care that helps you regain energy, vitality, and motivation through a method that **suits you best** is recommended.

Featured: [Aromatherapy × Music Therapy]

What is attracting attention in integrated medicine now is the method of **combining aroma and music therapy.**

**Representative aromas** include **lavender and peppermint.**

When you smell a **pleasant fragrance**, the **signal travels from the olfactory nerve to the ancient, deep part of the brain.**

This is a region that has existed in organisms since ancient times, before biological evolution, in the **primitive brain.**

Since it is involved in instinct and emotion, it is thought to **heal your entire mind and body from a deep level of the heart.**

By **combining** this type of **aroma** with **music** that acts on **deep levels of consciousness**, it is expected that the **relaxing effect will be further enhanced.**

The cranial nerves (No. 1-12) involved in the deep brain and emotional brain of humans include the olfactory nerve (No. 1) and the vestibulocochlear nerve (No. 8).

When **aroma and music** act on these areas, the **parasympathetic nervous system becomes dominant**, leading to a **calm and relaxed state of mind and body.**

4. Can music change the taste of food?!

~Interesting Research on "Sonic Seasoning"

Everyone desires to be enveloped in a space of soul-cleansing music and to savor delicious food.

Research has progressed in this area.

This involves attempts to stimulate hearing, taste, and smell simultaneously by setting up an environment or conditions where one can enjoy a feast while listening to familiar or favorite songs.

The phenomenon of **sound affecting taste** is called **"Sonic Seasoning"** among experts.

Research ① Music influences menu selection

When you dine at various restaurants, appropriate music is playing as background music, right?

Let's think the other way around here.

If there's no background music, you'll hear the conversation at the next table, won't you?

What kind of **BGM** would be **inappropriate**?

For example...

  • **Beethoven's Symphony** → Too heavy

  • **Rock and roll with continuous dissonance** → Unpleasant mood

  • **Screaming opera singers** → Restless

  • **Enka with a broken heart theme** → Too emotionally involved

and so on.

It's a bit funny, but what do you think about these reasons?

Ultimately, it can be said that **BGM should not overly influence people's minds at an unconscious level, and should not be too distracting.**

Now, because **music works unconsciously,**

BGM can **influence menu choices.**

It is said that if **German music** is playing, people tend to order **beer**, and if **French music** is playing, they tend to order **wine.**

How about your case?

Research ② Sound stimulates taste

In the UK, there's a highly famous Michelin three-starred restaurant called The Fat Duck.

The owner, Mr. Blumenthal, conducts scientific cooking and, through collaborative research with Oxford University, discovered that **music stimulates taste.**

For example, when eating oysters...

① When listening to the sounds of cows or horses

② When listening to the sound of waves

When investigated, it is said that in **② listening to the sound of waves**, the taste is perceived as richer and saltier.

Here, let me introduce a famous creative dish.

**"Sound of the Sea"**

It is said that by listening to the sound of waves while eating, the taste buds are stimulated, enhancing the flavors of seafood such as shellfish and seaweed.

If you ever have the chance to visit the UK, why not make a reservation and experience it?

In this way, various studies are advancing in recent years on the phenomenon where **hearing influences taste—"Sonic Seasoning."**

Building on music therapy, adding aromatherapy, and expanding these investigations will lead to stress reduction, improved health, and greater well-being.
