"Is your gut healthy?"

"Yes, super healthy!?"

"A healthy gut is ideal."

We eat daily to obtain necessary nutrients.

The intestines, which digest and absorb nutrients for human survival, also play a role in maintaining immunity.

This time, I will talk about the "intestines".

1. What is the surface area of the intestines? What is the origin of the kanji character?

Origin of the kanji character "腸" (chō - intestine)

The left side is the radical "月 (niku-zuki)", meaning a part of the body.

On the right side is the component "昜", which means "the sun rising above the ground", and from the situation of "the sun rising, stretching up", it signifies "the stretching large intestine, small intestine, and entrails."

What is the surface area of the intestines?

Speaking of which, your intestines stretch out and enlarge their surface area, working hard.

How large do you think it is?

If you were to spread out the entire inner wall of the large intestine, its surface area would be half a tennis court (approx. 100 ㎡ for nutrients), and the small intestine would be twice that, a full tennis court (approx. 200 ㎡).

2. Gut Flora and Intestinal Bacteria

Why it's called the "Third Organ"

What is gut flora?

The small and large intestines are shaped like tubes, aren't they?

Many bacteria inhabit these, playing crucial roles.

These diverse bacteria form groups by type, and when viewed under a microscope, the inside of the intestines resembles a "flower garden (flora)".

For this reason, it has been called "gut flora (intestinal microbiota)".

The complex kanji character "叢" (sō) is formed from 丵 (saku) (meaning wild growth of grass) + 取 (shū, sō), meaning a thicket or cluster.

Intestinal bacteria, also known as the "third organ"

There are over 1000 types of gut flora, and their number is countless, estimated at around 100 trillion.

The total weight of bacteria residing in the large intestine (approx. 1-1.5 kg) is comparable to the weight of the liver.

Because their functions are closely related to human health, intestinal bacteria are sometimes called the "third organ."

3. Role of Intestinal Bacteria - Aids Metabolism and Boosts Immunity

The main roles of intestinal bacteria include the following:

  • Produces energy

  • Aids in the metabolism of fats, vitamins, hormones, etc.

  • Prevents obesity

  • Fights harmful pathogens and viruses

The risk to the digestive tract is that various external enemies enter with food.

Therefore, "immune" functions that fight pathogens and viruses are essential.

In fact, the intestines boost immunity and prevent infections.

Recent research has revealed the relationship between gut flora and diseases.

Not only intestinal diseases, but also arteriosclerosis, diabetes, allergies, depression, rheumatism, and dementia are implicated.

By increasing intestinal bacteria (beneficial bacteria) and boosting the power to fight pathogens and viruses (harmful bacteria) = immunity, various health benefits can be expected.

4. How to improve gut flora?

Improve with diet! Increase "short-chain fatty acids" and "lactic acid bacteria"

To achieve good gut flora, consistent lifestyle habits, including diet, are crucial.

As an agricultural people, the Japanese have consumed a diverse range of ingredients since ancient times.

Therefore, Japanese flora exhibits distinct characteristics.

However, it is changing due to the Westernization of diet and lifestyle.

Point ① Short-chain fatty acids

A crucial point is short-chain fatty acids produced by bacteria.

These activate immunity, suppress the activity of harmful bacteria, and increase beneficial bacteria to maintain balance. That's wonderful.

Consuming plenty of fiber-rich foods like salads is recommended, as they serve as raw materials for the production of short-chain fatty acids.

Point ② Lactic acid bacteria

Furthermore, lactic acid bacteria and polyphenols are effective for improving flora.

Lactic acid bacteria are beneficial for flora.

Consuming foods rich in lactic acid bacteria, such as dairy products and cheese, is effective.

Here, as a recent topic, let's introduce lactic acid bacteria B240.

It was discovered in "Miang," a traditionally fermented tea consumed in the northern region of Thailand.

Let's show the characteristics of lactic acid bacteria B240.

1. Secretes IgA antibodies to capture and repel pathogens like bacteria at the mucous membranes, preventing their invasion.
2. Increases mucin secretion in saliva and elsewhere, preventing mucous membrane dryness.
3. The higher the intake of B240, the lower the risk of catching a cold.

B240 is found in Japan in a sports drink called Body Mainte* and a jelly (yogurt flavor).

* Body Mainte is a product of Otsuka Pharmaceutical

Finally...

Gut flora varies widely depending on country, eating habits, diet, and individuals, with various dairy products playing diverse roles.

If your digestive system is in good condition, your immune system and regular lifestyle habits will also be maintained.

May you live a rich life, connecting smooth bowel movements, comfortable intestines, and sound sleep with physical, psychological, and social well-being.
